Tribute to a Pioneer of Indian Modernity

The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, paid homage to social reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy on Thursday, marking his birth anniversary and recognizing him as a trailblazer of Indian modernity.


In a post on the social media platform 'X', Banerjee expressed, “I offer my humble tribute to the great social reformer and pioneer of Indian modernity, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, on his birthday today.”


She further stated, “Roy was a leading figure of the Indian Renaissance and a visionary who imagined an enlightened and nationalist India. We continue to remember him at every step of our lives.”


Born in 1772, Roy was a prominent social reformer, scholar, and religious leader, often referred to as the 'Father of the Indian Renaissance.' He played a crucial role in shaping modern India by advocating for social, religious, and educational reforms. Roy is also well-known for his efforts to abolish the practice of Sati and promote widow remarriage. He passed away in 1833.
