Mamata Banerjee Heads to Delhi Amid Tensions in Trinamool Congress
Mamata Banerjee's Departure to Delhi
Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress, departed for Delhi on Sunday, just a day before the opposition alliance meeting known as 'India'. Accompanying her are Rajya Sabha member Dola Sen and Lok Sabha member Kalyan Banerjee. The party's national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, arrived in the national capital on Saturday, as the leadership grapples with concerns that dissent may be spreading within its parliamentary group.
Strategic Meetings Ahead of Opposition Alliance Gathering
Initially, Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek were scheduled to travel to Delhi together for the 'India' alliance meeting. However, the Diamond Harbour MP left a day earlier on Saturday. It is anticipated that the top leadership of the Trinamool will assess the internal situation of the party before the meeting on Monday. This move comes amid reports suggesting that discontented leaders and MPs may attempt to replicate the unrest seen in the West Bengal Assembly within Parliament.
Internal Strife Within Trinamool Congress
Out of 80 MLAs in the Trinamool Congress, 58 have rebelled against the official party line, forming a separate faction that has been recognized as the main opposition in the Assembly. This development is considered one of the most significant political setbacks for Mamata Banerjee since the party's inception. Sources familiar with the situation indicate that efforts are underway to garner support among MPs in both houses of Parliament.
Political Discussions During Delhi Visit
During her stay in Delhi, it is expected that political discussions and meetings will take place to maintain unity among party MPs and leaders, as indications suggest that rebellious MPs may take action in the coming days.
Concerns Over Leadership Criticism
According to Sandipan Saha, the new deputy leader of the rebel faction, similar unrest is occurring within the parliamentary party in New Delhi as was seen in the West Bengal Assembly. Following the defeat of the Trinamool Congress in last month's Assembly elections, several party leaders have openly criticized Abhishek Banerjee and his leadership style. Currently, there are 28 members representing the party in the Lok Sabha, following the passing of MP Haji Nurul Islam from Basirhat.
