Significant Challenges for Mamata Banerjee

Mamata Banerjee has encountered two major setbacks in West Bengal's political landscape. On one hand, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrived at the residence of Abhishek Banerjee, while on the other, the Speaker of the Assembly has officially recognized Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP). This raises questions about whether a new phase of challenges is beginning for the ruling party in Bengal.

Ritabrata Banerjee, who was expelled from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for anti-party activities, received this recognition from the Assembly Speaker after 60 legislators submitted letters in his support. He stated that the TMC legislative group comprises 58 members who won on the party's symbol, with two additional members expected to join soon. Ritabrata also announced that Javed Khan, Sandipan Saha, Sabina Yasmin, and Shiuli Saha will serve as deputy leaders of the TMC legislative group.

TMC Leadership Changes

In this context, TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee addressed the West Bengal Assembly Speaker, Rathindra Bose, to inform about key appointments within the party. He announced that Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay has been appointed as the leader of the house. Additionally, Ashima Patra and Nayana Bandopadhyay have been designated as deputy leaders in the Assembly, while Firhad Hakim has been appointed as the chief whip. On Monday, the Trinamool Congress expelled two of its legislators, Sandipan Saha and Ritabrata Banerjee, due to allegations of anti-party activities.
