Mamata Banerjee Criticizes BJP and Election Commission for Undermining Democracy
Mamata Banerjee's Strong Allegations Against BJP and Election Commission
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a fierce critique on Wednesday against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the central government, and the Election Commission, accusing them of misusing constitutional institutions to weaken democracy. Speaking at an election rally in Mainaguri, North Bengal, Banerjee claimed that the BJP-led central government and the Election Commission are 'stripping away voting rights.'
She warned that the next step could involve the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which may lead to the deprivation of citizenship. Banerjee further alleged that certain communities are being excluded from the electoral process through a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. 'Names of Rajbanshis are being removed through SIR,' she stated.
She also pointed out that women's names are being taken off the lists. 'If deaths occur due to SIR, who will take responsibility?' she questioned. The Trinamool Congress leader emphasized that the Election Commission, BJP, and the central government are not adhering to the Constitution and are attempting to take away voting rights. 'Today they are taking away voting rights; tomorrow they will bring in the NRC to strip away citizenship,' she warned.
Without naming Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, or Home Minister Amit Shah, Banerjee urged the crowd to 'bid farewell to the gentlemen present here and those in Delhi.'
The Chief Minister accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of being deprived of its rights, asserting that the party's greatest strength lies with the people of the state. She alleged that the BJP and the Election Commission are colluding, stating, 'They have taken everything from us. Now I only have our people.' Before departing for North Bengal, Banerjee referenced a six-year-old document from the Election Commission at Kolkata Airport, which allegedly bore the BJP's lotus symbol.
She questioned, 'Why are you playing hide and seek? Come out openly and compete.' Banerjee mentioned that she has instructed her party candidates to bring lawyers when submitting nomination papers, alleging that nominations in BJP-ruled Assam have been canceled. 'I will ask my candidates to take lawyers with them when filing nominations. Many nominations have been canceled in Assam. I do not trust the BJP and the Election Commission.'
