In a post on the social media platform X, Banerjee expressed her respect for all tribal brothers and sisters on this significant occasion. She noted that the fight of the Santhals, under the leadership of Sido and Kanhu, continues to motivate us against the tyranny and exploitation of rulers.

The Chief Minister also announced that her government has named a university in the Jungle Mahal region of western Bengal after the two tribal leaders. The Sido-Kanhu-Birsa University, located in Purulia district, is a state-run institution.

Hool Day commemorates the anniversary of the Santhal rebellion against British rule that took place in 1855-56. Sido and Kanhu Murmu, two brothers, were pivotal figures in leading this uprising, which originated in the Jharkhand region.

The rebellion began in the village of Bhognadih, aiming to raise a voice against the exploitation faced by the Santhal people from both British authorities and local landlords.
