Mamata Banerjee Calls for TMC Rebuilding After Election Defeat
Mamata Banerjee's Call for Party Renewal
In the wake of a significant defeat in the recent West Bengal elections, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has acknowledged the loss and urged candidates from her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), to focus on rebuilding the organization. During a meeting at her residence in Kalighat, which included the party's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, she expressed optimism about the party's revival despite the recent electoral setback.
After holding power for three consecutive terms, the TMC faced a major defeat against the BJP in the 2026 state elections. In a message directed at leaders wishing to distance themselves from the party's reconstruction efforts, Banerjee stated that those wanting to leave the TMC are free to do so. Sources indicate that she remarked on letting those who are joining other parties go, emphasizing her commitment to rebuilding the party. She encouraged those remaining to restore damaged party offices, repaint them, and reopen them, even offering to assist with the painting if necessary. Banerjee asserted that the TMC would never bow down, claiming that the public mandate had been stolen.
According to the Election Commission, the TMC secured only 80 out of 293 assembly seats in the state, a significant drop from the 215 seats it won in the previous elections. Although West Bengal has 294 assembly seats, one constituency, Falta, is set for a re-poll on May 21. Notably, Banerjee lost in Bhabanipur, a seat she has long considered her political stronghold.
The TMC fielded candidates for 291 seats, leaving three in the Darjeeling hills for its ally, the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), led by Anit Thapa. Out of these, only 80 candidates emerged victorious, while 211, including several prominent leaders and ministers, faced defeat. The meeting in Kalighat was convened for candidates who contested on the party's ticket, occurring amidst reports of internal dissent and speculation about potential defections following the election results.
