Significant Conviction in Terror Case

Guwahati, Dec 31: A significant development in the fight against terrorism has occurred with the conviction of a key figure involved in a Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) conspiracy. The Special Court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Guwahati, Assam, has sentenced Md. Kamruj Zaman, also known as Dr. Hurairah and Kamaruddin.

On Tuesday, the court imposed three separate sentences of simple imprisonment, with the most severe being life imprisonment, as stated by the NIA on Wednesday.

The sentences will be served concurrently and include life imprisonment under Section 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, according to the agency's statement.

Additionally, the court sentenced him to five years of simple imprisonment for each of the other two charges under Section 18B of the UA(P) Act, 1967, in conjunction with Section 120B of the Indian Penal Code, and under Section 38 of the UA(P) Act.

A fine of Rs 5,000 was also imposed for each of the three counts, with an extra three months of simple imprisonment for any default in payment, as per the agency's report.

This case, recorded as RC 08/2018/NIA-GUW in Assam's Hojai district, involved a conspiracy led by Kamruj Zaman to establish a module of the banned Hizb-ul-Mujahideen in Assam during 2017-18.

The NIA's investigation revealed that Zaman had recruited individuals such as Sahnawaz Alom, Saidul Alam, and Omar Faruk to further his agenda of creating a terror network in the region.

Officials indicated that these activities were intended to extend the influence of the Pakistan-based terror group in Northeast India.

Prosecutors noted that Kamruj Zaman played a crucial role in efforts to form and bolster extremist networks in Assam, acting on behalf of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. He was apprehended in 2018 following a thorough investigation by central authorities.

The anti-terror agency submitted a charge sheet in March 2019 against five individuals, including Zaman and the others implicated in the case.

During the trial, Sahnawaz Alom, Saidul Alam, and Omar Faruk were found guilty after admitting their involvement. The fifth accused, Jaynal Uddin, passed away due to health issues while the trial was ongoing.
