Significant Changes Announced by President Droupadi Murmu


On the evening of March 5, 2026, President Droupadi Murmu implemented a substantial reshuffle in the appointments of governors and lieutenant governors across various states and union territories in India. This significant change affects a total of nine regions, including key states like Bihar, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu.

Key Changes Include:



  • West Bengal: The current governor, Dr. C.V. Anand Bose, resigned due to personal reasons, a decision that was accepted by the President. In his place, R.N. Ravi, the governor of Tamil Nadu, has been appointed as the new governor of West Bengal. This change comes just before the assembly elections, stirring political activity in the state. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has termed this a unilateral decision by the central government.


  • Tamil Nadu: Following R.N. Ravi's transfer, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, the governor of Kerala, has been given additional charge of Tamil Nadu.


  • Bihar: Retired Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain has been appointed as the new governor, replacing Arif Mohammad Khan. This change coincides with discussions regarding Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.


  • Delhi: The current lieutenant governor, Vinai Kumar Saxena, has been appointed as the lieutenant governor of Ladakh. He will be succeeded by former ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu as the new lieutenant governor of Delhi.


  • Ladakh: Kavinder Gupta has resigned and has been appointed as the governor of Himachal Pradesh.


  • Himachal Pradesh: Shiv Pratap Shukla has been appointed as the governor of Telangana.


  • Telangana: Jishnu Dev Varma has been appointed as the governor of Maharashtra.


  • Nagaland: Nand Kishore Yadav, the former speaker of the Bihar assembly, has been appointed as the new governor.



These appointments come at a politically crucial time, especially with the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and other states.
