Major Political Developments in Maharashtra: Potential Merger of NCP and Congress

Currently, Maharashtra's political landscape is buzzing with news regarding a potential merger between Sharad Pawar's party and the Congress. This development has been confirmed by senior Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar, who previously served as the opposition leader in the Maharashtra Assembly. In an exclusive interview, he stated that discussions are underway with the central leadership regarding the integration of Pawar's party into Congress. He welcomed all those who believe in the secular ideologies of both Congress and Sharad Pawar's party to join.

The news has stirred considerable activity in political circles. Notably, in 1999, Sharad Pawar separated from Congress to establish the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). However, the political tides have shifted, as in 2023, his nephew Ajit Pawar rebelled, splitting the NCP. Ajit Pawar, along with his supporting legislators, joined the Maharashtra government led by BJP and Shiv Sena. Following this rebellion, Sharad Pawar's NCP has been contesting elections alongside Congress in the Maha Vikas Aghadi, and the whispers of a complete unification between the two parties have sparked renewed political interest from Maharashtra to Delhi.

Recent political setbacks have also affected regional leaders like Mamata Banerjee and Uddhav Thackeray, whose MPs have opted to form separate factions. Amid this backdrop, discussions about a potential merger with Congress are gaining traction. Sources indicate that negotiations regarding the merger of Sharad Pawar's NCP into Congress are now in the final stages, showing positive progress. It is reported that the Congress leadership has given the green light to NCP legislators and MPs who wish to join Congress. However, there are differing opinions regarding the political future of the 85-year-old Sharad Pawar and his party. One faction is reportedly in favor of joining the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), arguing that the party's parliamentary strength could benefit from being part of the NDA.

Leaders from this faction believe that being in opposition has made it challenging to address developmental issues at both state and central levels. Sources also reveal that the late Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had hoped that if the two factions of the NCP reunited, they would remain aligned with the NDA, as they were already part of that coalition. However, following his passing, the likelihood of the factions reuniting has diminished, though this faction believes that joining the NDA separately would not pose any obstacles. Conversely, another faction within the party is reportedly in favor of merging with Congress.
