Raipur/Durg, April 7: A significant fire broke out on Tuesday at the Power Plant-2 (PBS-2) of the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) located in Durg district, Chhattisgarh, triggered by an explosion in the 25 MW turbine section.
Thick black smoke filled the vicinity as flames soared nearly 10 feet high, causing panic among the workers inside the facility.
Reports indicate that five individuals were injured in the incident, including two regular employees and three contract workers. One employee suffered a leg fracture, while the others sustained minor injuries. All injured personnel received prompt medical care.
Although the fire has been completely extinguished, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of all employees and contract workers.
A thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the incident, and measures to prevent future occurrences will be reinforced.
Initial assessments suggest that the fire spread quickly following the explosion in the turbine area. Workers on-site managed to evacuate through a rear exit, averting a potential disaster.
Fire department teams acted swiftly, with over six fire tenders arriving at the scene promptly. Senior officials from the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) also rushed to the site.
The fire has now been fully contained, but the extent of the damage is still under evaluation.
Preliminary findings indicate that several cables were damaged during the incident. The exact cause of the explosion and subsequent fire is still under investigation.
A source from the plant management stated, “The quick response from fire services and the alertness of workers in evacuating through the rear exit helped prevent loss of life. We are grateful that the situation was managed without major casualties.”
This incident has raised renewed concerns regarding industrial safety at large public sector enterprises.
The Bhilai Steel Plant, a key facility for SAIL, has experienced similar incidents in the past, leading to calls for stricter compliance with safety protocols during maintenance and operations.
Authorities have committed to restoring normal operations as soon as possible after conducting necessary repairs and safety audits. The injured individuals are reported to be in stable condition.
Further updates regarding damage assessment and investigation results are anticipated.
The state government and SAIL management are closely monitoring the situation to ensure worker safety and minimize production disruptions at the plant, which is crucial to India’s steel industry.
