Major Fire Breaks Out in Delhi Markets Ahead of Diwali
Fire Incidents Cause Alarm in Delhi Markets
New Delhi: As Diwali approaches, a series of fire incidents have raised concerns in Delhi's markets. A significant blaze erupted early Friday morning at Gaffar Market in Karol Bagh, affecting approximately 40 to 45 shops. Additional fires were reported in warehouses located in Sangam Vihar and Gandhi Nagar, heightening worries among local traders.
Details of the Gaffar Market Fire
The fire at Gaffar Market ignited around 1:30 AM in a shop located in a narrow alley of the four-story commercial building, which houses mobile phone and electronic goods stores. Initial reports suggest that the fire started from a mobile battery shop on the ground floor and quickly spread to the upper levels of the building.
Extent of Damage and Response
The blaze has reportedly impacted around 40 to 45 shops, leading to significant losses for traders, especially with a large inventory present for the Diwali season. Fire department officials deployed approximately 27 fire engines and over 125 personnel to combat the flames, facing challenges due to the narrow lanes of the market.
Possible Cause of the Fire
Preliminary investigations by the police indicate that overheating or overcharging of mobile batteries may have triggered the fire. However, the exact cause is yet to be confirmed. The fire department will request reports from electrical inspectors, and a forensic science team will also examine the site to assess structural safety.
Additional Fires in Gandhi Nagar and Sangam Vihar
In addition to the Gaffar Market incident, fires were reported in warehouses in Gandhi Nagar and Sangam Vihar. A fire broke out in a fabric warehouse located in Shanti Mohalla, prompting fire engines to respond. Another warehouse in Sangam Vihar was also affected, raising concerns about fire safety in busy market areas.
Concerns Over Fire Safety Ahead of Festivities
With the festive season drawing crowds to Delhi's markets and a significant amount of goods stored in shops, the risk of fire incidents increases. The Gaffar Market fire has highlighted the urgent need for enhanced fire safety measures among traders and officials. Currently, assessments of the damage are underway, and relevant agencies are conducting investigations. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries, although the property damage is substantial.
