Kolkata, August 3 - In a significant operation in Malda district of West Bengal, authorities conducted overnight raids linked to the smuggling of banned cough syrup. During these operations, approximately ₹2.5 crore in cash, a small quantity of gold, and various electronic devices were confiscated, as reported by the police on Monday.

According to police sources, this seizure occurred during a joint operation involving the Malda and South Dinajpur district police, supported by the state's Special Operations Team (SOT), at a flat located in the Manglabari area of Malda.

The raids were initiated following the investigation of a previous case where a large shipment of the prohibited cough syrup was seized in the neighboring South Dinajpur district. A police official stated, 'Bundles of cash amounting to around ₹2.5 crore were recovered from the flat, along with a small amount of gold and some electronic devices.'

The exact valuation of the seized items is currently underway. Investigators suspect that the cash may be linked to the illegal trade of the banned cough syrup. They are also probing whether an interstate smuggling ring is involved in this case. The police are working to trace the source of the funds, the ownership of the flat, and identify the individuals utilizing the premises.
