In a notable operation as part of the ongoing 'Nasha Mukt Abhiyan' by the Himachal Pradesh Police, authorities in Sundernagar successfully confiscated 2.816 kilograms of charas from a vehicle during a routine checkpoint on the Pung four-lane. Two individuals, one from Mandi district and the other from Punjab, have been apprehended in connection with this incident.
Suspicious Behavior Leads to Drug Discovery
The operation was led by Sub-Inspector Daulat Ram, who was conducting standard vehicle inspections on the Pung four-lane. A white Scorpio SUV traveling from Manali to Bilaspur was stopped for a check.
According to police reports, the driver and his companion exhibited suspicious behavior upon noticing the checkpoint, which prompted a thorough search of the vehicle. During this search, a packet was discovered inside the SUV, which upon inspection was found to contain a significant amount of charas.
The contraband was weighed at the scene, totaling 2.816 kg, leading to the immediate arrest of both individuals.
Identification of Suspects and Vehicle Confiscation
The suspects have been identified as Vijay Kumar, 36, from Sarkaghat in Mandi district, who was driving the vehicle, and a 26-year-old from Ludhiana, Punjab.
The police have also seized the Scorpio SUV used for transporting the illegal substances.
Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation
Superintendent of Police (SP) Mandi, Vinod Kumar, confirmed that a case has been filed against both suspects under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
"Initial investigations suggest that the drugs were meant for distribution. Police teams are actively working to trace the origin of the charas and identify the intended recipients," he stated.
Investigating the Supply Chain
The police are broadening their investigation to uncover the entire supply chain, including both upstream and downstream connections of the suspects. Officials emphasized their commitment to a strict anti-drug trafficking policy.
This recent seizure is viewed as a significant achievement for the Mandi police as they intensify efforts against narcotics operations in the area.
