Maharashtra's Forts Recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Historic Recognition for Maratha Forts
The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, announced on Friday that the Maratha Military Landscapes, which symbolize the fortification system of the Maratha rulers, have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This significant decision was made during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Paris.
In total, twelve forts belonging to the Maratha rulers have received this prestigious status. These include notable sites such as Salher Fort, Shivneri Fort, Lohagad, Khanderi Fort, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Swarnadurg, Panhala Fort, Vijaydurg, and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra, along with Jinji Fort in Tamil Nadu. Fadnavis expressed his gratitude on the social media platform X, stating, 'The Maharashtra government pays homage to our beloved Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj! Heartfelt congratulations to all citizens of Maharashtra and Shiv devotees.'
He further expressed his joy in announcing that the twelve forts of our greatest king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, have been recognized by UNESCO. Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar remarked that the inclusion of these forts in the UNESCO World Heritage List is a matter of historical and cultural significance and pride for the state. Pawar emphasized that these forts stand as witnesses to the valor, sacrifice, and vision of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Maratha warriors, and now their legacy will receive global recognition and respect.
