Maharashtra Police Accelerates Investigation into Assault Case Involving Shiv Sena Councillor

The Maharashtra police have committed to accelerating their investigation into the assault case involving Shiv Sena councillor Ramesh Mhatre, who allegedly attacked doctors at a municipal hospital. Investigation Update on Assault Case

On Friday, the Maharashtra police assured the Bombay High Court that they would expedite the investigation against Shiv Sena councillor Ramesh Mhatre, who is accused of assaulting doctors at a municipal hospital in Dombivli, Thane district. The incident occurred on July 6, and Mhatre was arrested two days later. A magistrate court granted him bail on July 14, but the High Court intervened, putting a stay on the bail four days later.

Following the High Court's directives, Mhatre surrendered to the authorities and is currently in judicial custody. His lawyer, Abad Ponda, requested the High Court to consider releasing Mhatre on bail with strict conditions, stating that he is willing to remain outside Maharashtra until the investigation concludes. However, this request was opposed by senior lawyer Ashok Mundargi, appointed to assist the court, and S.U. Kamdar, representing the Indian Medical Association.

They argued that Mhatre should not be granted bail until the investigation is complete. Advocate General Milind Sathe informed the bench that the investigation is now being overseen by the police's Deputy Commissioner, as per the court's order from the previous week. He noted that in addition to the nine individuals previously recorded, statements from 17 more witnesses have been taken, with 10 additional testimonies still pending.

The police are working diligently to complete the investigation within two weeks. The bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhade, stated that it would continue hearing the case on August 6 and consider Mhatre's bail application. Mhatre and his associates were arrested on the night of July 6 for allegedly assaulting two doctors and nurses at the Shastri Nagar Hospital of the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation.

This incident occurred when a family was advised to transfer their newborn to another hospital. The video of the assault went viral on social media, sparking significant public outrage.
