Mumbai, Aug 4: Leaders from various political parties in Maharashtra expressed their sorrow on Tuesday following the passing of Padma Shri Dr. D.Y. Patil, the founder of the D.Y. Patil Group and former Governor of Tripura, Bihar, and West Bengal.


Born on October 22, 1935, in Ambap, Kolhapur, Dr. Patil made significant contributions primarily in the field of education. He began his political journey with the Congress party but later shifted his focus entirely to education. He is renowned for establishing a vast network of schools, colleges, universities, and hospitals throughout Maharashtra and beyond.


In remembrance of his impactful legacy, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis remarked, "His journey from an ordinary worker to holding esteemed constitutional roles such as mayor and governor is truly inspiring. He played a crucial role in revolutionizing education, ensuring that opportunities reached the underprivileged in society.


"Beyond his educational and medical institutions, he also developed a world-class sports complex in Navi Mumbai and made significant contributions to agriculture and social initiatives. His receipt of the Padma Shri award is a testament to his remarkable achievements. His loss is a significant blow to our community, and I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family."


Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge stated that with Dr. Patil's passing, Maharashtra and the nation have lost a visionary leader dedicated to education and social welfare. "His life exemplified the highest standards of public service, and his unwavering commitment to societal betterment earned him respect across political lines. His pioneering institutions have transformed the lives of countless individuals, providing them with educational and career opportunities," Kharge added.


Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, expressed his sorrow, stating, "The news of Dr. D.Y. Patil's demise is deeply saddening. His contributions to education and public service will always be remembered. I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and supporters."


NCP SP President Sharad Pawar remarked, "The news of Dr. D.Y. Patil's passing is heartbreaking. His exceptional work in education, health, sports, and social service will continue to inspire future generations. Maharashtra has lost a visionary leader whose dedication to societal improvement will be remembered fondly. I pay my respects to him and offer condolences to his family."
