On the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti, set for January 14, the government plans to deposit ₹3,000 into the bank accounts of eligible women. This amount combines two pending installments from December and January. However, the timing of this payment, occurring just a day before the municipal elections, has sparked considerable political controversy in the state.

Gift for Makar Sankranti or Election Strategy?

According to the government’s plan, the two installments of ₹1,500 each for December and January will be transferred simultaneously. The administration argues that this financial assistance is intended to support women during the festive season. Nevertheless, the opposition has raised concerns about the timing of the payments.

Congress Files Complaint with Election Commission

The Congress party has formally approached the Election Commission, arguing that disbursing funds on the eve of voting constitutes a clear violation of electoral regulations. With voting scheduled for January 15, the party contends that depositing money into the accounts of female beneficiaries just before the election could influence voter behavior.
