Maharashtra ATS Re-arrests Software Engineer in Terrorism Investigation

Maharashtra ATS Takes Software Engineer into Custody

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has once again taken software engineer Jubair Hungargekar into custody. The ATS informed the court that it is investigating IP addresses from Afghanistan and Hong Kong found on his Telegram account.

On Wednesday, the ATS secured Hungargekar's custody for the second time. He was initially arrested in October on suspicion of links to banned organizations such as Al-Qaeda and 'Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent' and for involvement in radical activities.

A special court under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) has remanded him to ATS custody until January 3.

Details of the Arrest

An official stated, 'The ATS took Hungargekar into custody again on Wednesday. The court has sent him to ATS custody until January 3.' Under UAPA, police can hold a person arrested for terrorism-related offenses for a maximum of 30 days for questioning with court approval.

Hungargekar, aged 37, was apprehended on October 27 on allegations of connections with banned terrorist organizations. Following his arrest, the court initially placed him in ATS custody for 18 days.

Subsequently, last month, the investigative agency requested to transfer him to judicial custody, which the court accepted, while also retaining the right for police custody. Therefore, the remaining duration of ATS custody was still applicable.

The court has now once again placed Hungargekar in ATS custody.

Ongoing Investigation

Previously, the ATS had informed the court that during the investigation, they discovered a Pakistani phone number on Hungargekar's old phone.

Additionally, the ATS had reported to a Pune court that Hungargekar allegedly delivered 'aggressive' religious discourses in the Kondhwa area of the city.
