Prayagraj, January 3, 2026: The Magh Mela 2026 commenced on the auspicious occasion of Paush Purnima in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. From early morning, millions of devotees gathered at the Triveni Sangam to take holy dips, filling the air with chants of 'Har Har Gange' and 'Jai Gange Maiya'. Despite the biting cold and fog, a surge of faith brought long queues of worshippers to the riverbanks.
Event Duration and Attendance Expectations
This religious festival spans 44 days, starting from January 3 and concluding on February 15, 2026, coinciding with Mahashivratri. According to officials, millions of pilgrims participated in the first day's rituals, with expectations of over 150 million visitors throughout the event. Devotees undertaking 'Kalpavas' have also set up camps along the Sangam, committing to rigorous penance during the entire month of Magh.
Government Preparations and Safety Measures
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended his greetings to all devotees via social media, stating, 'Heartfelt wishes to all pilgrims and residents of the state on the commencement of Magh Mela and the sacred occasion of Paush Purnima.' The administration has implemented extensive arrangements for the festival, including surveillance via drones and AI-based cameras, pontoon bridges, tent cities, and health facilities. To maintain the sanctity of the Ganges, over 350 industrial units in Kanpur have been temporarily shut down.

The railway authorities have also arranged special trains to facilitate easy access for pilgrims.
