Court Ruling on Religious Practices

In a significant ruling, the Madras High Court's Madurai bench upheld a previous order on January 6, which mandates the lighting of lamps at a stone pillar known as 'Deepathoon' located near a shrine on the Tirupurkundram hills. The bench, comprising Justices G. Jayachandran and K.K. Ramakrishnan, clarified that the site of the stone pillar is part of the Lord Subramaniam Swamy temple.

The court emphasized that the district administration should view this matter as an opportunity to resolve community differences. It also stated that any activities at this protected site must strictly adhere to the provisions of the law. The court specified that lamps can only be lit after consulting the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), and the number of attendees must be regulated.

Rama Ravikumar, the petitioner, welcomed the decision, describing it as a victory for devotees of Lord Muruga.

Rajesh, a leader from Hindu Munani, remarked that the court's decision is commendable. The government's appeal was dismissed, affirming that lamps should be lit at Deepathoon, and the temple administration must make the necessary arrangements. The court rejected the government's concerns about potential law and order issues, stating that these reflect the government's inaction. This ruling is seen as a triumph for Hindus and Murugan devotees in Tamil Nadu, including students.
