Bhopal, Jun 29: In a remarkable advancement for the horticultural landscape of Madhya Pradesh, the Jumbo Custard Apple (Sitafal) from Seoni district has officially received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Geographical Indications Registry located in Chennai.

This certification, granted in June, acknowledges the unique characteristics of these large fruits, which are primarily grown in the wild and natural areas of the Bhutbandhani region within the Chhapara block of Seoni.

Previously, there was some confusion with the Seoni Malwa variety from Narmadapuram (Hoshangabad) district, but the GI tag now distinctly identifies Seoni’s unique variety.

These custard apples are celebrated for their impressive size, typically ranging from 200 grams to as much as 1 kilogram, along with their superior sweetness, creamy texture, and rich nutritional benefits. The specific soil, climate, and traditional agricultural methods in the forested areas contribute to the fruit's larger size and unique flavor compared to other varieties.

The application for the GI tag was submitted in 2023 by members of the Bhutbandhani Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO), including Sadam Singh Barkade and Rajkumar Bhalavi, in partnership with the state Horticulture Department.

After three years of thorough examination, including documentation of geographical specifics and quality standards, the registry granted the tag, which offers legal protection against imitation and boosts market value.

Local farmers, especially around 3,000 tribal families engaged in custard apple farming, are thrilled. The GI tag is anticipated to create opportunities for better pricing, exports, branding, and tourism. It aims to position Seoni Jumbo Sitafal as a premium product in both national and international markets, akin to other GI-tagged fruits like the Beed Custard Apple from Maharashtra.

Officials from the Horticulture Department emphasized that this tag will empower FPOs, encourage sustainable farming practices, and safeguard traditional knowledge. This recognition not only honors Seoni’s biodiversity but also promises economic upliftment for rural communities, according to a senior official. This development aligns with Madhya Pradesh's efforts to enhance its GI portfolio, which includes recent tags like the Indori Malwi potato and Ratlam Garadu.

For Seoni, this achievement marks a sweet victory, showcasing the potential of indigenous products when supported by institutional backing.
