Madhya Pradesh Government Launches Investigation into Fatal Bargi Dam Boat Accident

A tragic boat accident at Bargi Dam in Madhya Pradesh has resulted in nine fatalities, prompting the state government to launch a high-level investigation and suspend all cruise operations. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed condolences and announced honors for local heroes involved in rescue efforts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his sympathies and announced compensation for the victims' families. The incident occurred due to a sudden storm, and rescue operations are ongoing as authorities work to prevent future tragedies.
 

Investigation Ordered Following Tragic Incident

Guwahati, May 1: The government of Madhya Pradesh has initiated a high-level investigation into the devastating cruise boat accident at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur district, which resulted in the loss of nine lives. In response, an immediate suspension of cruise boat operations throughout the state has been implemented.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and announced that local heroes who participated in the rescue efforts would be honored on Independence Day.

“Individuals who displayed remarkable bravery in saving lives will receive recognition,” he stated.

The tragic event unfolded on Thursday evening when a cruise boat capsized at Bargi Dam, situated on the Narmada River, due to an unexpected storm. Officials reported that while nine individuals perished, approximately 28 to 29 passengers were successfully rescued. Rescue operations were ongoing at the time of this report.

Addressing the media outside Lok Bhawan, Yadav mentioned that the tourism department has been tasked with conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.

“A comprehensive inquiry will be carried out to determine the causes, including the effects of the sudden weather change, to prevent future occurrences,” he added.

He noted that various agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local authorities, were promptly engaged in rescue and relief efforts, along with senior officials and ministers.

Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda confirmed that the tourism department has issued a directive to halt cruise boat operations until further notice and has begun an inquiry into the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his sorrow over the tragic loss of life. In a statement on a microblogging platform, he remarked, “The loss of lives due to the capsizing of a boat in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, is profoundly distressing. I extend my condolences to those mourning their loved ones… I am praying for the swift recovery of the injured.”

He further announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of each deceased individual and Rs 50,000 for those injured.
