Madhya Pradesh CM Promises Action After Assault on Assamese Student
Assault Incident at Indira Gandhi National Tribal University
Anuppur (MP), Jan 17: On Saturday, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav of Madhya Pradesh pledged to take stringent measures against those responsible for the attack on an Assamese student at Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) in Amarkantak. The police have classified the incident as a non-bailable offense.
The assault reportedly took place around 4 PM on Tuesday when Hiros Jyoti Das, a 22-year-old postgraduate student from Assam, was allegedly attacked by five other students within the university hostel. An FIR was filed shortly before midnight on Wednesday following Das's complaint.
In a statement on X, Yadav confirmed that the police had initiated appropriate legal proceedings and that the university administration had also taken action against the suspects. He emphasized, "No one will be spared."
Superintendent of Police Moti-ur-Rehman stated that the Medical Legal Certificate indicated injuries to Das's nose and the area beneath his eyes. Consequently, Section 114 (causing grievous hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was incorporated into the case.
Initially, the suspects faced charges under Sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 296 (obscene acts and words), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), and 3(5) (common intention) of the BNS. The inclusion of Section 114 has rendered the case non-bailable, with a potential maximum sentence of seven years in prison, according to the SP.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused questioned Das about his origins prior to the assault, although police noted that no racial slurs were reported.
Das claimed in his complaint that the attack occurred as he was returning to his hostel room from the washroom. He identified Anurag Pande, Jatin Singh, Rajnish Tripathi, Vishal Yadav, and Utkarsh Singh as the individuals involved.
Previously, police in Amarkantak reported that the five accused students had either fled or returned to their homes in Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
This incident follows the tragic death of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, who died from injuries sustained in an alleged knife attack at a private university in Dehradun last month, igniting widespread concern regarding student safety.
