Luis de la Fuente Defends Rodri Amid Criticism Following Spain's Draw
De la Fuente Defends Rodri Against 'Insulting' Criticism
Luis de la Fuente, the coach of Spain, has labeled the criticism directed at captain Rodri as 'insulting' after the team's unexpected 0-0 draw with Cape Verde. This result leaves all four teams in Group H with one point each, creating a competitive scenario for qualification ahead of the upcoming matches on Sunday. De la Fuente expressed his disbelief at the negative remarks, stating, 'It seems incredibly insulting to me that people would say that about the best player in the world. Would people say that about others who are considered the best in the world? I think they wouldn't dare,' during an interview with Cadena COPE radio, as reported by ESPN.
He further emphasized Rodri's exceptional talent, asserting that even when not performing at his peak, he surpasses most midfielders. De la Fuente praised Rodri's vision, composure, and his ability to maintain balance within the team, calling him a source of inspiration for Spain. 'But because they're Spanish, we say things about our own that we wouldn't about others. Rodri is the best player in the world. Even at 50%, he is better than most other midfielders in the world. He brings clarity, vision, and balance. Rodri is an inspiration for us,' he added.
Cape Verde's Remarkable Defense Stuns Spain
In a remarkable display of defensive skill, Cape Verde managed to hold the world number two-ranked Spain, who are also the reigning European Champions, to a goalless draw during the FIFA World Cup match in Atlanta on Monday.
Despite being one of the smallest nations by population to participate in a tournament, Cape Verde's defense showed immense heart, as Spain attempted 27 shots without scoring. This marked the joint-highest number of attempts Spain has made in a FIFA World Cup match without finding the net, equaling their 27 attempts against Paraguay in the 1998 World Cup, which also ended in a scoreless draw.
