On Sunday, Atul Bora, a minister in the Assam Cabinet, extended his congratulations to Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain for securing a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026. He emphasized that her dedication and accomplishments serve as a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes throughout Assam.

A Close Contest in the Final

Lovlina clinched silver in the women's 75kg boxing category at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, narrowly losing to Australia's Emma-Sue Greentree by a 4-1 split decision in a tightly contested final on Saturday.

Bora expressed his pride in Lovlina's commitment and contributions to both Assam and the nation, stating, "Heartfelt congratulations to Lovlina Borgohain for her silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. Her dedication and commitment make us proud, and she has become a role model for young athletes in Assam."

Tactical Battle in the Gold Medal Match

The final match was characterized by strategic play, with both boxers carefully waiting for the right moments to strike. Greentree ramped up her efforts in the final rounds, but Lovlina skillfully dodged her attacks while landing several effective punches.

As the match concluded, both competitors raised their hands, believing they had secured victory. However, after a tense deliberation, the judges awarded the match to Greentree, resulting in Lovlina receiving the silver medal.

A Milestone in Lovlina's Career

This result marks Lovlina's first Commonwealth Games medal, extending her quest for a gold medal. Previously, she faced early exits in the quarterfinals at Gold Coast 2018 and in the first round at Birmingham 2022.

The 28-year-old boxer reached the final after receiving a direct semifinal berth and achieving a commanding 5-0 victory over Tarona Taafaki from Tuvalu, ensuring her place on the podium.

An Accomplished Boxer

Lovlina is recognized as one of India's top boxers, having won a historic bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, making her the third Indian boxer to achieve an Olympic podium finish. She is also a former world champion and an Arjuna Award recipient, having secured gold at the Elite Women's Boxing Tournament in Hyderabad in 2025.

In addition to her boxing career, she serves as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in the Assam Government.

India's Boxing Success at the Commonwealth Games

India wrapped up the boxing events in Glasgow with its most successful Commonwealth Games performance to date, amassing a record total of 10 medals, including seven gold and three silver.

The gold medals were won by Preeti Pawar (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (51kg), Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Arundhati Choudhary (70kg), Sachin Siwach (60kg), and Ankush Panghal (80kg). The silver medals were claimed by Jadumani Singh (55kg), Lovlina Borgohain (75kg), and Narender Berwal (+90kg).

This achievement surpasses India's previous best performances in boxing at the Commonwealth Games, where the country had previously won three gold medals each at Delhi 2010, Gold Coast 2018, and Birmingham 2022, showcasing India's growing prowess in the sport.
