Glasgow, July 23: Lovlina Borgohain, who earned a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, has secured India's first medal at the Commonwealth Games by advancing directly to the semifinals in the women's 75kg boxing category. This achievement guarantees her at least a bronze medal.

The 28-year-old boxer from Assam received a bye in the first round of the five-boxer draw, allowing her to move straight into the semifinals.

In the semifinal match scheduled for July 31, Lovlina will compete against Tuvalu's TKBP Taafaki, with the winner earning a spot in the gold medal match.

This marks Lovlina's inaugural Commonwealth Games medal, adding to her impressive collection of accolades from major international competitions.

She has previously medaled at the Olympic Games, World Championships, Asian Games, and Asian Championships.

With a bronze already secured, Lovlina is now focused on upgrading her medal to gold in Glasgow.

This achievement continues her strong performance in 2026.

Earlier this year, she won a bronze medal at the Asian Boxing Championships in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, despite a 0-5 loss to Uzbekistan's Aziza Zokirova in the women's 75kg semifinal.

This result highlighted her successful return to the international boxing scene after a consistent year.

She kicked off the season by winning the national title in Noida in January and later clinched gold at the Boxam Elite International tournament in Spain.

In the final of the 75kg category, Lovlina showcased her skills by defeating England's Mary-Kate Smith with a score of 4-1, indicating her return to peak performance ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

With a medal now assured, Lovlina aims to convert her bronze into gold, filling the last gap in her impressive list of multi-sport achievements.

India had previously secured 61 medals at the last Commonwealth Games and has sent a 125-member team to Glasgow this year, which includes para-athletes.
