Guwahati, Aug 2: Lovlina Borgohain, who secured a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026, has dedicated her achievement to those affected by food scarcity in Assam, emphasizing that her success is a collective victory for all who supported her.

In the women's 75kg boxing final, Lovlina faced Australia's Emma-Sue Greentree, ultimately losing by a split decision of 4-1. She expressed her solidarity with families impacted by the recent floods in the region.

"My thoughts and prayers are with every family during this challenging period. I hope for a swift recovery for Assam and that life returns to normal soon. This medal is for everyone who has been part of my journey," she stated on Sunday.

The final match at the SEC Centre in Glasgow was fiercely contested, with Greentree taking an early lead through aggressive tactics and effective punches, winning the first round 4-1.

Lovlina showed resilience in the second round, despite receiving a warning for an accidental blow to Greentree's head. She fought back valiantly, managing to equalize the bout and push it into the final round.

However, Greentree regained her dominance in the last three minutes, landing cleaner shots that led four out of five judges to favor her, securing the gold medal.

Reflecting on her journey, Lovlina expressed her gratitude towards India's women's head coach, Santiago Nieva, and the entire support team.

"A heartfelt thank you to our head coach, Santiago Sir. His exceptional coaching, dedication, and belief in us have significantly contributed to our success," she remarked.

She also acknowledged the hard work and commitment of all coaches and support staff at the Indian national camp, stating, “Their efforts prepared us to excel on the biggest platforms.”

While she noted that winning a gold medal would have made the moment even more special, Lovlina expressed pride in India's overall performance in boxing.

"Achieving seven gold medals and three silver medals is a historic milestone, the first of its kind. I congratulate every member of our team for this remarkable success," she added.

Despite not clinching the title, the silver medal marks a significant achievement for Lovlina, being her first medal at the Commonwealth Games after earlier quarterfinal exits in Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022.

With this accomplishment, she joins the ranks of only two other Assamese athletes to win a CWG medal: Jayanta Talukdar, who earned bronze in archery in 2010, and Nayanmoni Saikia, part of India's historic gold medal-winning lawn bowls team in 2022.
