Nishio (Japan), Sep 28: Lovlina Borgohain has guaranteed herself a second consecutive medal at the Asian Games by advancing to the semifinals in the women’s 75kg category, following a decisive 5-0 victory over South Korea’s Seong Suyeon on Monday.
In her opening match of the tournament, Lovlina showcased her skills, dominating the quarterfinals and ensuring at least a bronze medal.
“This is my second time securing a medal at the Asian Games. I aim to upgrade it to gold this time and will give my utmost effort,” she expressed in an interview with a local media outlet in Japan.
Lovlina began aggressively, employing her 1-2 combination effectively to disrupt Seong, who found it challenging to land punches despite her slight height advantage.
During the second round, Lovlina maintained her momentum with precise combinations of crosses and hooks, although she faced some defensive challenges as Seong launched a series of punches.
The round was closely fought, with the Korean utilizing her height to her advantage, yet Lovlina's agility and speed allowed her to deliver cleaner and more impactful punches.
Lovlina admitted that the quarterfinal match was not straightforward.
“Our strategy was effective, but the match was tough,” she noted.
The Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist had previously secured a silver medal at the last edition held in Hangzhou in 2023.
With her recent silver at the Commonwealth Games, the boxer from Assam has now medaled in all major competitions, including the World Championships, Asian Games, Asian Championships, and World Cup.
In the semifinals, she will face Natalya Bogdanova of Kazakhstan, the reigning world champion in the 70kg category.
With this victory, Lovlina joins fellow boxers Parveen Hooda (65kg), Ankush Panghal (80kg), and Narender Berwal (+90kg), who also progressed to the semifinals on Sunday.
Later today, Priya Ghanghas (60kg) and Kapil Pokhariya (90kg) will compete for semifinal spots in their respective categories.
