Lokpal Cancels BMW Car Procurement

New Delhi: The Lokpal, India's anti-corruption ombudsman, has decided to cancel its contentious tender for the acquisition of seven luxury BMW cars, valued at approximately Rs 5 crore, just two months after it was announced, as reported by officials on Thursday.

This cancellation is particularly noteworthy given the criticism from opposition parties and civil society members regarding the Lokpal's choice to pursue such high-end vehicles.

The Lokpal's full bench reached this decision, leading to the issuance of a corrigendum on December 16, 2025.

Initially, on October 16, 2025, the Lokpal had issued a request for proposals inviting bids from reputable firms for the supply of seven BMW 3 Series 330Li cars.

These vehicles were intended for the chairperson and six members of the Lokpal, which is currently led by retired Justice A M Khanwilkar. The Lokpal can have a maximum of eight members, split evenly between judicial and non-judicial.

The tender specified the procurement of BMW 330Li 'M Sport' models in white with a long wheelbase, with the on-road cost in New Delhi estimated at around Rs 5 crore.

The decision to procure these luxury cars faced severe backlash from opposition parties, who accused the Lokpal, tasked with upholding integrity, of prioritizing luxury over accountability.

Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh referred to the Lokpal as 'Shauq Pal', while former Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant urged the Lokpal to withdraw the tender and consider electric vehicles made in India instead.

The tender document outlined that the chosen vendor would need to provide extensive training for the Lokpal's drivers and staff to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the BMW vehicles.

This training would include both theoretical and practical sessions, covering aspects such as familiarization with the BMW 330Li M Sport's controls and safety features, operational training, and understanding fuel efficiency and driving modes.
