Lok Sabha Rejects Women's Reservation Bill Amid Controversy
Lok Sabha Votes Down Women's Reservation Legislation
On Friday, the Lok Sabha dismissed a bill aimed at swiftly implementing women's reservation and conducting delimitation without a new census. Speaker Om Birla announced that the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill failed to secure the required two-thirds majority during the voting process. Out of 528 total votes, 298 members supported the bill, while 230 opposed it.
Government's Legislative Agenda Stalled
To pass any constitutional amendment bill in the Lok Sabha, a two-thirds majority is essential. The government had also introduced the 'Delimitation Bill, 2026' and the 'Union State Law (Amendment) Bill, 2026' for discussion and approval, but these too could not progress. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that following the failure of the constitutional amendment bill, the related bills could not be advanced.
Home Minister Criticizes Opposition
Home Minister Amit Shah accused opposition parties of obstructing women's reservation, asserting that women across the nation are aware of who stands in their way and will confront their anger. Responding to discussions on the 'Constitution (131st) Amendment Bill 2026', 'Delimitation Bill, 2026', and 'Union State Law (Amendment) Bill, 2026', he claimed that those opposing delimitation are also resisting the increase of reserved seats for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC-ST). Shah emphasized that the population imbalance between different seats could only be rectified through delimitation and urged the opposition to cooperate.
Opposition Leader's Strong Rebuttal
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi contended that the bill related to the amendment of the Women's Reservation Act has no connection to women's reservation but is an attempt to alter India's electoral landscape, calling it a 'shameful act.' Participating in the discussions on the aforementioned bills, he accused the government of attempting to suppress caste census efforts. Gandhi declared, 'The entire opposition will unite to thwart this government's endeavor,' asserting that the current bill is not about women's empowerment, unlike the Women's Reservation Bill passed in 2023.
Light Moments in Lok Sabha
The Lok Sabha witnessed some light-hearted moments when Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju humorously remarked that 'the Law Minister recited a poem dedicated to his wife in the house yesterday, which led to a lot of scolding at home.' Meanwhile, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey took a jab at Rahul Gandhi's speech regarding women's reservation bills, likening it to a 'magic show' or 'Michael Jackson's dance.' During the discussion on these bills, Dubey had a brief exchange with Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav.
Rajya Sabha Proceedings
The Rajya Sabha session was adjourned for the day following the election of nominated member Harivansh as Deputy Chairman. Upon the commencement of the upper house's meeting, Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan presented necessary documents. Subsequently, Union Minister and Leader of the House J.P. Nadda proposed Harivansh's election as Deputy Chairman, which was supported by S. Phangnon Konyak. The proposal was unanimously approved, marking Harivansh's third term in this role. He assured the members of the upper house that he would strive to uphold the dignity of the house, protect members' rights, and ensure smooth proceedings. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Harivansh on his re-election, emphasizing that being chosen for a third consecutive term reflects the trust the house has in him.
