Lok Sabha Proceedings
On Tuesday, the Lok Sabha voted to revoke the suspension of eight opposition MPs through a voice vote. The proposal was introduced by Kiren Rijiju, a member of the Parliamentary Affairs Committee, following an expression of regret from Congress Whip K. Suresh regarding the 'unintentional mistake' made by some members. Support came from Dharmendra Yadav of the Samajwadi Party and Supriya Sule from the Nationalist Congress Party. Subsequently, the House continued discussions on the grant proposals for the Ministry of Railways for the fiscal year 2026-27. Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha is set to bid farewell to retiring members on March 18, with no question hour or zero hour session to allow members to deliver speeches.
Lok Sabha Session Highlights
During question hour, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla reiterated his request for members to ask brief questions and for ministers to provide concise answers. He questioned whether ministers could not attempt to give shorter responses. This came as the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, GM Harish Balayogi from the Telugu Desam Party, was responding to a supplementary question. Additionally, Birla urged the government to form groups of MPs to provide detailed information on the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, to which Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan agreed to comply with the Speaker's directive.
On the same day, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that the government is working on a unified farming model aimed at benefiting smallholder farmers. He stated during question hour that the government has initiated various models of integrated farming for small farmers and is showcasing them in several locations.
Shatabdi Roy, a member of the Trinamool Congress, claimed in the Lok Sabha that elderly individuals aged 70-80 are often assigned upper berths in trains, while younger passengers receive lower seats. Participating in the discussion on the grant demands for the Ministry of Railways for 2026-27, she criticized the government for focusing on revenue generation rather than addressing the needs of senior citizens.
Rajya Sabha MP Abhay Sinha urged Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to add at least five general compartments to every mail and express train to facilitate travel for the economically disadvantaged. He referenced a previous statement from the minister indicating plans to add additional compartments to the existing mail and express trains.
Rajya Sabha Proceedings
In the Rajya Sabha, BJP member Ajit Madhavrao Gopchade emphasized the need for scientific management of funerals due to limited land resources, advocating for a policy that respects all traditions. He raised this issue during zero hour, noting the rapid urbanization and continuous population growth in the country.
The government announced in the Rajya Sabha that it plans to establish ten All India Ayurveda Institutes over the next five years, with locations determined based on 'need and merit.' AYUSH Minister Prataprao Jadhav provided this information during question hour in response to supplementary questions.
Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan mentioned that following reports of irregularities in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in states like West Bengal, a comprehensive overhaul of the scheme is being considered, leading to the introduction of the 'Vikasit Bharat Ji Ram Ji' initiative. He explained that under this new scheme, development plans will be formulated at the village level rather than at the state or national level. Responding to discussions on the rural ministry's operations in the Rajya Sabha, Chouhan emphasized that the core aim of this initiative is to provide employment to laborers, ensuring 125 days of work instead of the previous 100 days.
