Lok Sabha Passes Thank You Motion Amidst Opposition Protests
Lok Sabha's Thank You Motion Approved
On Thursday, the lower house of Parliament approved a motion of thanks for the President's address. However, the proceedings were frequently disrupted by shouting from opposition members, leading to the session being adjourned until 2 PM. Despite the ongoing uproar from the opposition, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla called for a voice vote, resulting in the motion passing without Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing the house.
Prime Minister's Expected Response
Prime Minister Modi was anticipated to respond to the motion of thanks on Wednesday; however, due to repeated interruptions and protests from opposition members, the Speaker decided to suspend the Lok Sabha. Later, the Prime Minister is expected to speak on the motion in the Rajya Sabha. Meanwhile, as the upper house convened on Thursday, opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge raised objections, claiming that the leader of the opposition was not being allowed to speak in the 'second house.'
Debate Between Kharge and Nadda
In response to Kharge's allegations, Rajya Sabha leader and BJP President JP Nadda stated that discussions regarding the proceedings of the Lok Sabha cannot take place in the upper house. Kharge insisted that the opposition leader in the second house aims to 'highlight the government's mistakes,' which he claimed was causing discomfort among ruling party members. Nadda countered by asserting that the government is open to discussing all issues but advised Kharge not to hold his party hostage to ignorance and arrogance.
Tensions in the Upper House
Kharge condemned Nadda's remarks, alleging that BJP members were being pressured regarding their ability to speak in Parliament. A heated exchange occurred between opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge and BJP leaders in the Rajya Sabha when a Congress MP accused that opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was not permitted to speak in the Lok Sabha. The opposition has been protesting against the central government for allegedly preventing Rahul Gandhi from addressing the lower house, referencing unpublished memoirs by former Army Chief General MM Naravane regarding the 2020 China standoff.
