Lok Sabha Lifts Suspension of Eight Opposition MPs Amid Calls for Cooperation
Immediate Revocation of Suspension
On March 17, the Lok Sabha took the decision to immediately lift the suspension of eight Opposition members who had been barred from the House since February 3 due to their "unruly" conduct. This action followed a request from Congress leader K Suresh, who urged the House to reconsider the situation.
Suresh expressed regret over the events that transpired in the House and emphasized that his party was committed to ensuring the smooth operation of parliamentary proceedings.
In response to various submissions from Opposition members, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju highlighted the necessity of establishing a "Laxman Rekha" to facilitate the effective functioning of the House, a sentiment that was echoed by both the treasury and opposition benches.
"We were not elected to disrupt the proceedings or engage in protests. It is essential for the House to operate smoothly with the cooperation of all members," Rijiju stated.
Speaker Om Birla reiterated the importance of maintaining decorum, stating that no placards, posters, or AI-generated images should be displayed within the House or the Parliament complex.
Suresh noted that since Monday, Opposition members had refrained from displaying any placards or banners, reaffirming their willingness to cooperate for the proper functioning of the House.
Birla remarked that there is a collective agreement that the proceedings in the Parliament, as the world's largest democracy, should be conducted smoothly, necessitating cooperation from all.
Following this discussion, Rijiju proposed a motion to revoke the suspension of seven Congress MPs and one CPI(M) member, which was passed by a voice vote.
The suspended members included Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, C Kiran Kumar Reddy, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore, Prashant Padole, and Dean Kuriakose from Congress, along with S Ventakesan from CPI(M).
These MPs had been suspended for the entire duration of the ongoing Budget session, which is set to conclude on April 2.
