Lok Sabha Extends Joint Parliamentary Committee's Review Period for 'One Nation, One Election' Bill
Extension of Review Period for Key Legislation
The Lok Sabha has decided to extend the review period of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the 'One Nation, One Election' bill until the first day of the last week of the 2026 monsoon session. This legislation proposes to conduct simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The committee's chairman, P.P. Chaudhary, put forth the proposal to extend the JPC's mandate concerning the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The proposal was passed by voice vote in the House.
Background of the Legislation
Initially introduced in December 2024, this bill was referred to the Joint Committee for further examination. The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, popularly known as 'One Nation, One Election,' aims to synchronize the elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, is also part of a broader framework designed to facilitate simultaneous elections across the country.
Current Status of the JPC
Currently, the JPC is reviewing the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024. These bills were presented in the Lok Sabha on December 17, 2024, and subsequently sent to the JPC for further scrutiny, with the collective aim of enabling simultaneous elections nationwide. The last meeting of the JPC took place on March 9 at the Parliament House Annex in New Delhi. Following the meeting, JPC Chairman P.P. Chaudhary stated that the concept of 'One Nation, One Election' serves the national interest rather than the interests of any political party.
