Lok Sabha Adjourned Amidst Opposition Protests Over Electoral Roll Revisions

The Lok Sabha was adjourned on Tuesday following relentless protests from the Opposition, who demanded a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Despite the government's readiness to engage in dialogue, the session was disrupted multiple times due to sloganeering. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged members to maintain decorum, while also addressing the Congress party's declining public confidence. The ongoing tensions in Parliament reflect the challenges faced during the Winter Session, with similar disruptions occurring on the first day.

Opposition Protests Lead to Adjournment

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha was adjourned on Tuesday due to persistent protests from the Opposition, who were calling for a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The government, however, expressed its willingness to engage in dialogue on the matter without specifying a timeline.

Following two earlier adjournments, the House reconvened at 2 PM, but was met with loud slogans from Opposition members.

Dilip Saikia, who was overseeing the session, appealed to the Opposition to allow the proceedings to continue, emphasizing that the government was prepared to discuss the SIR process, which has already been completed in Bihar with visible results.

The Central Excise (Amendment) Bill, 2025 was scheduled for consideration but could not be addressed due to the ongoing disruptions.

During the Zero Hour, which lasted about 10 minutes, various reports and documents from standing committees were presented.

Members from the Congress and other Opposition parties vocally protested against the SIR of electoral rolls, insisting on an immediate discussion.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged the protesting members to maintain the decorum of the House, noting that many representatives from different parties also deserved to be heard.

He criticized the disruption caused by a few parties and cautioned against expressing frustration over electoral losses within the House, referencing the late BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee's own electoral defeats.

Rijiju remarked that the Congress party is losing public confidence, while reiterating the government's readiness to discuss pertinent issues.

As the uproar continued, the session was adjourned again within 10 minutes until 2 PM.

Earlier, the proceedings had been suspended until noon due to similar protests.

The first day of the Winter Session on Monday also faced interruptions from Opposition protests, resulting in multiple adjournments.
