Local Residents Protest Against Land Encroachment Near Bongaigaon
Community Takes Action Against Illegal Land Occupation
Bongaigaon, Jan 6: A collective of concerned citizens has voiced strong opposition to the encroachment of land adjacent to the Tunia River at Santipara, close to the New Bongaigaon crematorium. On Sunday, they filed a complaint with the police regarding the encroacher.
The individual involved, Hazrat Ali, known locally as 'Maulana', was reportedly attempting to redirect the river's flow to unlawfully claim land for personal use. Residents who witnessed this act intervened and alerted the authorities.
Unable to justify his actions, Ali abandoned the diversion efforts and left the area, according to a local eyewitness.
Community members have raised concerns that numerous immigrants of questionable nationality have constructed homes by encroaching on land owned by the railways and government, as well as areas bordering rivers and water bodies. Encroachments have also been reported on agricultural fields behind the New Bongaigaon Railway Station.
Residents expressed that this neighborhood has become a hub for antisocial and anti-national activities. They emphasized the urgent need for an eviction campaign and action against suspected illegal migrants who have allegedly settled here using forged documents.
The locals contend that while these migrants assert their lands are legitimate, much of it is unlawfully occupied. They believe that a thorough examination of the settlers' land documents at the local revenue office would reveal any forgeries.
Consequently, the community has urged the police and civil authorities to scrutinize the documentation of these questionable settlers near the New Bongaigaon crematorium, particularly regarding land ownership, identity, citizenship, original addresses, and current occupations.
