Lionel Messi, the legendary figure behind Argentina's FIFA World Cup victory, recently expressed his disappointment about not mastering English during his school years. He shared that this lack of proficiency often leaves him feeling 'half-ignorant' when engaging with influential figures globally.

During an interview on the Mexican podcast 'Miro de Atras,' Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS) and serves as Argentina's captain, discussed the opportunities he missed due to this language barrier.

He stated, 'I regret many things. Not having learned English as a boy. I had the time to have at least studied English, and I did not do it. I deeply regret it.'

Messi recounted moments where he found himself in the company of remarkable personalities, wishing he could converse freely. 'I always thought: 'What an idiot, how I wasted my time,' he remarked.

Emphasizing Education to His Children

The football star emphasized the importance of education, particularly to his children, urging them to seize the opportunities available to them. 'I always tell my children to take advantage of it. They have a different situation from the one I had, although I never lacked anything,' he noted.

Messi moved from his hometown of Rosario to Barcelona at the age of 13, where he developed a significant relationship with FC Barcelona. He reflected on his final year of schooling in Argentina, describing it as a 'disaster.'

'I knew that I was leaving for Barcelona. At Barcelona, I finished my high school with the other children who went to [FC Barcelona's youth academy] La Masia,' he shared.

After joining Inter Miami in 2023 following two seasons with Paris Saint-Germain, Messi discussed the valuable lessons football has imparted to him, including the importance of values and the formation of lasting friendships.

'I was able to do everything and reach the top [in football], but along the way, there are many experiences and lessons learned,' he explained.

'It's true that football is a way of life. It teaches you a lot, it gives you a lot of values. It creates lifelong bonds. You get to know places,' he added.
