Messi's Historic Sixth World Cup Appearance

On Tuesday, Argentine football icon Lionel Messi reached a remarkable milestone by becoming the first player ever to participate in six men's FIFA World Cups. This achievement came during Argentina's opening match against Algeria in the 2026 tournament held in Kansas City, Missouri, as reported by ESPN.

Breaking Records

This match also marked Messi's 200th international appearance for Argentina, allowing him to surpass several notable players, including Cristiano Ronaldo from Portugal, Antonio Carbajal, Andres Guardado, Rafael Marquez (all from Mexico), and Germany's Lothar Matthaus, who were previously tied with him in World Cup participations. Ronaldo is anticipated to equal Messi's record when Portugal competes against Congo DR in their first match on Wednesday.

It's worth noting that while Mexico's goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has been included in six World Cup squads, he did not play in matches during two of those tournaments.

Messi's Lasting Impact on World Cup History

At 38 years old, Messi already held the record for the most World Cup appearances, having surpassed Matthaus during the 2022 final in Qatar. His latest match on Tuesday was his 27th in World Cup history. Although he has not officially declared his international future, Messi has hinted that this tournament might be his last major competition with Argentina. He first made his World Cup debut in 2006 at the age of 18, scoring as a substitute in Argentina's 6-0 victory over Serbia and Montenegro.

Joining the Elite 200-Cap Club

With this latest appearance, Messi has become only the third player in football history to achieve 200 international caps for his nation. He now stands alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Kuwait's Bader Al-Mutawa in this exclusive group.

The players with the most international caps include Cristiano Ronaldo (228), Bader Al-Mutawa (202), Lionel Messi (200), followed closely by Luka Modric (198) and other football legends, as noted by 433 X.
