Life Imprisonment for Man Convicted of Murdering Retired Engineer in Kokrajhar
Court Delivers Sentence in Kokrajhar Murder Case
Kokrajhar, August 13: A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Kokrajhar district for the murder of a retired engineer from the state Agriculture Department, an incident that occurred in 2023.
On Tuesday, District and Sessions Judge Nirmali Talukdar imposed the sentence on Sambhu Kahar for the murder of Tapan Chakraborty and for injuring his wife, Madhumita Chakraborty, during an attack at their home in the Bidhanpally area of Kokrajhar town on November 29, 2023.
Madhumita, who is a retired headmistress of D N Himatsingka High School, managed to survive after undergoing extensive medical treatment.
Kahar reportedly forced his way into the couple's residence and assaulted them with a sharp object. Tapan Chakraborty later died from his injuries at a private hospital in Bongaigaon.
The court found Kahar guilty on several counts under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including:
- Section 302: Life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 50,000, with an additional six months in prison for non-payment.
- Section 307: Ten years of imprisonment with a fine of Rs 5,000, plus three months more for default.
- Section 326: Ten years of imprisonment with a fine of Rs 5,000, and three months additional for default.
- Section 380: A fine of Rs 5,000, with six months imprisonment for non-payment.
This ruling comes nearly nine months after the violent incident that alarmed the Kokrajhar community, providing a sense of justice for the victim's family and reaffirming the state's dedication to upholding the law.
