Tragic Incident in Sohagirwa Wildlife Sanctuary
A tragic event unfolded on Saturday in the Nichlaual range of Sohagirwa Wildlife Sanctuary, where a leopard fatally attacked a 21-year-old woman. Authorities have confirmed the incident.
The victim has been identified as Sairun Nisha, a resident of Badhia village in the Nichlaual police jurisdiction. She had gone to graze goats near Bankasia Tola, just outside her village, around 3:30 PM.
Reports indicate that as she approached a sugarcane field, a leopard lying in ambush launched a sudden attack, inflicting severe injuries to her neck and face. Hearing her screams, villagers rushed to the scene and raised an alarm, prompting the leopard to flee into the forest.
Emergency responders quickly transported Nisha to the community health center in Nichlaual, where medical staff pronounced her dead after an initial examination. Niranjan Sarve, a forest officer from the Sohagirwa Wildlife Sanctuary, confirmed that the woman died as a result of the leopard's attack.
In response to the incident, forest personnel have been deployed in the area, and multiple teams are conducting patrols to capture the animal. Sarve advised villagers to avoid venturing alone into forested areas and sugarcane fields and to remain vigilant. He also mentioned that a report would be sent to the government to provide necessary assistance to the victim's family, ensuring compensation in accordance with legal provisions.
