Lebanon's Parliament Extends Term Amid Escalating Conflict with Israel and Hezbollah

In a critical political maneuver, Lebanon's parliament has extended its term by two years amid escalating tensions with Israel and Hezbollah. The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant civilian displacement and raised serious human rights concerns, particularly regarding the use of controversial munitions by Israeli forces. As the situation unfolds, the implications for Lebanon's governance and regional stability remain uncertain. This article delves into the recent developments and their impact on the Lebanese populace.

Lebanon's Political Landscape Shifts

In a significant political move, the Lebanese parliament has decided to extend its term by two years, a decision influenced by the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran. This escalation has led to increased military actions by Israel against Lebanon, particularly targeting the militant group Hezbollah.

The Israeli Defense Forces announced that they were focusing on Hezbollah's financial operations, specifically targeting al-Qard Al-Hasan, as part of their military strategy in southern Lebanon.

Human Rights Watch has raised concerns, accusing Israeli forces of deploying white phosphorus munitions in attacks on civilian areas in Lebanon, which constitutes a breach of international law.

Parliamentary Vote and Its Implications

According to Lebanon's state news agency, the vote to extend the parliament's term saw 76 legislators in favor, while 41 opposed and four abstained. Notably, Hezbollah's parliamentary bloc supported this extension.

The ongoing conflict with Israel, which reignited last week, has resulted in the displacement of over 500,000 individuals in Lebanon, complicating the logistics for upcoming elections that were initially set for May.

Israeli Strikes and Civilian Impact

Residents in the southern suburb of Beirut, known as Dahiyeh, were ordered to evacuate ahead of Israeli airstrikes. Following the attacks, smoke filled the skies over Beirut, with one strike reportedly destroying a building associated with al-Qard al-Hasan.

A Lebanese journalist present during the strikes sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Footage captured the moments of the strikes, which occurred in quick succession.

Subsequent airstrikes targeted additional locations, prompting Lebanese military forces to secure roads near al-Qard al-Hasan branches to protect civilians.

Israeli Military Operations Intensify

The Israeli military has initiated a 'focused raid' in southern Lebanon aimed at dismantling Hezbollah's operational capabilities. This operation involved a brigade combat team from the 36th Division, following a coordinated air and ground assault.

In retaliation, Hezbollah claimed to have targeted Israeli troops within Lebanon using anti-tank missiles and launched rockets towards the Israeli city of Kiryat Shmona.

Rising Tensions Between Hezbollah and the Lebanese Government

The latest hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah escalated on February 2, following the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a US-Israeli operation. Israel's response included extensive airstrikes and territorial gains in southern Lebanon.

In a recent development, the Lebanese government declared Hezbollah's military actions illegal and instructed security forces to detain individuals involved in attacks against Israel.

Three Hezbollah members were apprehended while armed and heading towards southern Lebanon but were later released on bail by a military court in Beirut.

Human Rights Concerns Over Israeli Military Tactics

Human Rights Watch reported that the Israeli military unlawfully targeted a village in southern Lebanon with white phosphorus shells, a controversial weapon. The organization verified the use of these munitions through geolocation of images.

The strikes occurred shortly after residents were warned to evacuate, raising serious concerns about civilian safety. The Israeli military has previously claimed that white phosphorus is used for smoke screens rather than as a weapon against civilians.

Human rights advocates argue that deploying white phosphorus in populated areas is illegal under international law due to its potential to cause severe harm to civilians.
