Lawsuit Aims to Halt UFC Event at White House Amid Controversy
Legal Challenge Against UFC Event
A federal lawsuit has been initiated to prevent a scheduled Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event from taking place on the South Lawn of the White House. The suit claims that the event unlawfully benefits President Donald Trump and his associates. Filed on Saturday by the Public Integrity Project on behalf of a political activist and a veteran of the US Air Force, the lawsuit challenges the plans for the event set for June 14, which is anticipated to occur on White House grounds.
The plaintiffs label the proposal as "deeply corrupt," asserting that it aims to financially benefit the president and his allies. The lawsuit argues that the Trump administration's endorsement of the event on federal parkland breaches US law. It also states that the construction related to the event, including a significant arch planned for the South Lawn, lacks congressional approval and has not undergone the necessary environmental assessments.
According to the lawsuit, "The President is granting [UFC CEO Dana] White and his organization privileges that have never been afforded before: unrestricted access to the White House and Lincoln Memorial for a private, profit-driven sports event, along with all the promotional and branding opportunities that come with such access." The filing suggests that multiple parties could gain financially from the event, including Trump, who reportedly has investments in UFC's parent company, Dana White, and the promotion's broadcasting partner Paramount SkyDance, along with advertisers linked to the event.
UFC has stated that the event is part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the United States. However, the lawsuit highlights that the event is scheduled for June 14, coinciding with President Trump's 80th birthday and occurring just weeks before Independence Day on July 4. The lawsuit claims, "The event is neither 'for the celebration of the 250th anniversary of American Independence' nor, importantly, being 'planned, organized, and executed' by the federal government." It further asserts, "Instead, UFC Freedom 250 is being conducted for the financial gain of UFC, Paramount, and their advertisers, and to commemorate Donald Trump's 80th birthday."
A White House representative dismissed the lawsuit, calling it "an obstructionist, baseless, and dilatory" attempt to stop the president from hosting what the official described as "one of the most historic sporting events in our nation's history" during the 250th-anniversary celebrations. The official added, "This iconic event is no different from other White House-hosted events on the South Lawn and properly permitted events on the Ellipse and National Mall throughout the year." The case is anticipated to be reviewed by a federal court prior to the scheduled event.
