Vasundhara Raje's Early Support

Lalit Modi, the former chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), expressed that Vasundhara Raje, the ex-Chief Minister of Rajasthan, was an early believer in his vision for a cricket tournament akin to the IPL. In a recent interview conducted in London, he shared that the creation he envisioned has proven to be both fulfilling and entertaining on a global scale. Modi also noted that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has gained significant strength due to the IPL.

From Business to Passion

Modi revealed that his passion for cricket developed after it became a business venture for him. He stated that this transformation occurred after he handed over his responsibilities at ESPN to the Murdoch family.

"Cricket was never my initial passion. It turned into one when it became a business for me at ESPN. After Murdoch took control, it became a priority for me," he explained.

No Threats After Leaving India

When asked if Raje ever cautioned him about potential repercussions from others, Modi responded that he faced no threats even after departing from India.

"I was unaware of anyone pursuing me until I left. Even after my departure, there were no threats. It was only before Shashi Tharoor that I faced scrutiny for different reasons. However, no one targeted me for my contributions. People still appreciate what I created, which remains satisfying and entertaining for audiences worldwide," he stated.

The IPL's Family Appeal

Modi emphasized that the IPL was designed to be enjoyable for families. He pointed out that the current generation, particularly teenagers, are largely unfamiliar with Test cricket or traditional Indian cricket, as their primary knowledge revolves around the IPL.

BCCI's Growth Due to IPL

When questioned about the BCCI's current strength, Modi affirmed that the IPL has undoubtedly contributed to its growth.

"That's why there is such a strong interest in joining. Initially, IPL represented just 1% of BCCI's revenue. Today, it accounts for 90%, and in three years, it is expected to reach 95%," he noted.

IPL's Legacy Amidst Controversies

Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has revolutionized franchise cricket and emerged as one of the most lucrative sports leagues worldwide.

However, Lalit Modi has been embroiled in a money laundering investigation by the Enforcement Directorate. In 2013, he received a lifetime ban from the BCCI due to allegations of misconduct. Modi maintains that he has committed no wrongdoing. He was the founder and first chairman of the IPL, overseeing its operations from 2008 to 2010, and has held various significant positions within cricket administration.
