In a recent interview, former IPL chairman Lalit Modi praised Jay Shah's leadership at the ICC, highlighting the dominance of Indian cricket in the global arena. Modi emphasized that Indian cricket is the only thriving business in the sport today, while defending BCCI's influence against historical criticisms. He noted the significant revenue generated by the IPL and the emergence of cricketing legends from India. Modi also discussed the successful organization of major ICC tournaments under Shah's leadership and the approval of a hybrid model for India-Pakistan matches, reflecting on the complex political dynamics affecting cricketing ties. This overview sheds light on the evolving landscape of cricket governance and India's pivotal role.

Lalit Modi Commends Jay Shah's Role in ICC

Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi expressed admiration for Jay Shah's leadership as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), stating that 'the only thriving business today is Indian cricket.' Modi shared these insights during an interview with a news agency. Shah, who previously served as the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), assumed the ICC chairmanship in December 2024.

Reflecting on Shah's contributions to the ICC and the elevation of Indian cricket's status, Modi remarked, 'His impact has been significant from my perspective. His contributions stem from his ability to access resources and achieve results. He is who he is because of his lineage, just as I am shaped by my family connections.'

Navigating Challenges in ICC

Modi elaborated on the challenges faced during his tenure at the ICC, noting, 'When we were in charge, we encountered opposition from England and Australia, who often collaborated against us. Back then, we had support from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Now, with Pakistan's absence, we have a stronger coalition within the ICC, and Mr. Shah has effectively managed to advance our interests.'

The State of Cricket Business

Lalit Modi also commented on the current state of cricket, asserting, 'The only successful entity in cricket today is Indian cricket. Other boards are struggling. When we say cricket is paramount, it's clear that Indian cricket holds the top position.'

Defending BCCI's Influence

Addressing criticisms regarding BCCI's dominance in global cricket, Modi defended the board's position, stating, 'I stand by it without hesitation. Historically, England controlled everything in cricket. My view is that we should surpass all others. The revenue generated from the ICC is minimal compared to what we earn from the IPL, which has become the primary source of income for us.'

He added, 'In the past, our revenue was split evenly between the ICC and BCCI. Now, IPL accounts for 90% of our earnings, while other boards are seeing their revenues decline.'

India's Cricketing Success

Modi's assertions about India's supremacy in cricket are supported by the financial success of the IPL and the emergence of cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

According to ESPNCricinfo, during the 2024-27 commercial cycle, BCCI is projected to receive 38.5% of ICC's annual revenue, with no other cricket board achieving a double-digit share.

Under Jay Shah's leadership, the ICC has successfully organized major tournaments, including the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, the 2025 ICC Women's Cricket World Cup, the 2026 ICC U19 World Cup, and this year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Team India has excelled in limited-overs cricket, securing numerous titles.

Additionally, a hybrid model for hosting matches between India and Pakistan at neutral venues during tournaments has been approved for the 2024-27 cycle, addressing the strained cricketing ties between the two nations due to ongoing political tensions.
