Lalit Modi's Perspective on Wealth and Lifestyle

Lalit Modi, the former IPL Commissioner, asserts that he has committed no wrongdoing regarding the legal issues he faces in India. He describes his upbringing as one where he was 'born with a diamond spoon' and boasts of a luxurious lifestyle, stating that 'Rs 10-12 crore' would barely last him a week.

In a recent interview conducted in London, the charismatic entrepreneur, who established the Indian Premier League, emphasized that he would not alter his way of living for anyone. He claims to have generated wealth through innovative strategies in his family business, stating, 'I have done nothing wrong... I was born with a diamond spoon. When you accuse me of taking a few crore rupees, I earn more than that daily. Our company has a market capitalization of two-and-a-half lakh crore.'

Friendship with Vijay Mallya

When asked about Vijay Mallya, who is currently embroiled in legal issues with the Enforcement Directorate, Modi referred to him as a friend. He noted, 'Vijay has a different story. I don't know what his issues are, but they relate to banks. We never borrowed money; I never took money from anyone. I only provided funds and paid my dues. Our businesses do not rely on bank loans or government contracts; we are a consumer brand and the largest manufacturer of Marlboro, the top brand globally.'

Self-Made Wealth

Modi also highlighted his entrepreneurial ventures, including Modi Entertainment Networks. He stated, 'I established everything myself. I have earned hundreds of millions of dollars throughout my life. If I made this money independently, why shouldn't I spend it?'

Legal Issues and BCCI Suspension

Currently, Lalit Modi is facing allegations of money laundering from the Enforcement Directorate. In 2013, he received a lifetime ban from the BCCI due to 'indiscipline and misconduct.' He was the founder, first chairman, and league commissioner of the IPL, overseeing the tournament from 2008 to 2010. Additionally, he held various positions, including chairman of the Champions League Twenty20 and vice-president of the BCCI.
