Lakshya Sen's Early Exit

Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen faced an early elimination in the first round of the Indonesia Open on Tuesday. The 24-year-old, currently ranked 10th in men's singles, was unable to keep up with the pace of Indonesia's Alwi Farhan, losing the match 21-19, 21-16 in just 48 minutes. Despite recovering from a 7-3 deficit in the first game and briefly leading 19-18, Lakshya ultimately lost as Farhan secured three consecutive points to clinch the opener. The second game was fiercely contested, with Farhan leading 17-16 before finishing the match with four straight points. This defeat marks Lakshya's second loss to Farhan in their two encounters, having previously lost in the semifinals of the Macau Open last year.

Sindhu's Strong Performance

In contrast, two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu advanced to the second round after a challenging match against Thailand's world No. 19, Busanan Ongbamrungphan. Sindhu won in straight games, 25-23, 21-16, extending her impressive record against Busanan to 21-1. The match lasted 51 minutes, with Sindhu facing significant pressure in the first game before dominating the second. This week, she made a return to the top 10 in women's singles for the first time since October 2023. Sindhu's recent performance includes a strong quarterfinal showing at the Singapore Open, where she defeated world number six Putri Kusuma Wardani before losing to Paris Olympics 2024 bronze medalist An-Se-young.

Mixed Results for Indian Shuttlers

Other Indian players had mixed results at the tournament. Former world number one Kidambi Srikanth suffered a first-round defeat against Japan's higher-ranked Yushi Tanaka, losing 21-19, 21-15. This continues a disappointing trend for Kidambi, who has yet to progress past the second round in any BWF World Tour event this season. In men's doubles, the Indian duo of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun achieved a surprising victory over Malaysia's Tan Wee Kiong and Mohammed Azriyn Ayub, winning 21-18, 21-10 to advance to the pre-quarterfinals. However, Malvika Bansod exited the women's singles after a 21-12, 21-10 loss to Thailand's seventh seed Pornpawee Chochuwong. Additionally, in women's doubles, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand were eliminated after a similar defeat to their Thai opponents. In mixed doubles, Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, who reached the semifinals in Singapore last week, fell to Malaysia's reigning world champions Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, losing 21-11, 21-10.
