La Liga Investigates Racism Allegation in Espanyol vs. Elche Match
Racism Allegation in La Liga Match
La Liga is launching an investigation into a new racism claim following an incident involving Espanyol defender Omar El Hilali and Elche striker Rafa Mir during their recent 2-2 match at Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero.
The controversy arose in the second half when El Hilali reported to referee Iosu Galech Apezteguía that Mir had made a racist comment, stating, "you came in a boat." Although the referee documented the allegation, he noted that none of the officiating team heard the comment. Consequently, the match was paused for three minutes in accordance with established protocols.
The referee's report has been forwarded to La Liga, which will review statements from players and coaches, along with match footage, to ascertain the details of the incident. This case comes on the heels of the recent racism controversy involving Vinicius Junior and Gianluca Prestianni, intensifying scrutiny on how the league manages such issues.
Support from Espanyol's Coach
After the match, Espanyol's head coach Manolo Gonzalez voiced his unwavering support for El Hilali. In a media briefing, Gonzalez remarked, "I believe it is a racist insult. Omar has never halted a game before; I trust that what he reported is accurate. I’m not entirely sure of the specifics, but it appears that Rafa Mir made a comment to him. The referee informed us that he followed the anti-racist protocol."
Gonzalez emphasized the necessity of eradicating racism from both football and society, while also highlighting the need to address all forms of insults. He stated, "While focusing on racism is crucial, there are numerous insults in football that must also be eliminated, as they lead to very unpleasant situations."
