Kylian Mbappe Faces Racist Remarks from Paraguayan Senator After World Cup Match

The conflict between French football captain Kylian Mbappe and Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla escalates following a World Cup match. After France's victory, Amarilla made racist remarks against Mbappe, leading to widespread backlash and support for the player, including from French President Emmanuel Macron. The incident highlights ongoing issues of racism in sports, particularly on such a prominent stage as the World Cup.

Escalating Tensions Between Mbappe and Senator Amarilla

NEW YORK: The conflict between Kylian Mbappe, the captain of the French football team, and Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla is intensifying. This feud began following France's narrow 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the World Cup pre-quarterfinals. In the aftermath of the match, Senator Amarilla unleashed a barrage of insults directed at Mbappe on her X account.

She referred to him as a 'colonized Cameroonian' who is 'struggling to appear French,' and labeled him as 'arrogant, greedy, and unattractive.' This racist commentary sparked significant outrage, prompting Mbappe and his supporters in France to respond vigorously. The backlash was so pronounced that even French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his support for Mbappe, commending him for confronting racism.

Under mounting pressure, the senator removed her initial racist remarks. However, rather than offering an apology, she issued an open letter to Mbappe, demanding that he apologize to her or face 'severe legal consequences.' In her letter, she stated, 'The issue is between you and me; I harbor no ill will towards France. My reaction stemmed from your excessive arrogance before and after the match.'

Amarilla accused Mbappe of using 'the most offensive Latin American insults' against their players during the game and claimed he refused to shake hands with their goalkeeper post-match. 'As a senator elected by the Paraguayan people, you know nothing about me. If you do not apologize, I will pursue legal action against you for violence against a woman,' she warned.

The pre-quarterfinal match between France and Paraguay had already garnered attention due to its rough play and heated exchanges. The Paraguayan team contends that Mbappe attempted to portray them negatively throughout the match and even ridiculed their goalkeeper after the game.

In her correspondence, the senator mentioned that she deleted her previous post due to experiencing racist abuse herself. Nevertheless, the football community has widely condemned the racist attack on Mbappe during a World Cup event.
