Jorhat, June 2: Kundil Sena, an organization representing the Chutia community in Assam, held a protest on Tuesday, accusing the Chutia Development Council (CDC) of misappropriating funds intended for community welfare, specifically alleging a scam involving Rs 125 crore.

Over 100 participants, including both men and women, took part in the demonstration, brandishing placards and chanting slogans like "We want justice", "Dissolve the Development Council", and "Chutia Development Council (CDC) Go Back".

The protest focused on claims that the CDC, established in 2020 to promote the community's development, has not provided any substantial benefits despite receiving Rs 125 crore in funding over the last five years.

A memorandum was presented to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma via the Jorhat District Commissioner, asserting that the annual funding of Rs 25 crore has not reached the intended beneficiaries within the community.

According to the memorandum, "Only a select group of leaders and their associates have allegedly profited from these funds," raising concerns about the allocation process.

The organization also accused the council of redirecting funds meant for community initiatives to "unnecessary schemes".

Protesters called for a thorough investigation by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau into the alleged misconduct, demanding accountability for those implicated and the immediate disbandment of the current Chutia Development Council.

"The council, which has been operational since 2020, has reportedly engaged in extensive irregularities and corruption while claiming to implement various programs," the memorandum highlighted.

During the protest, a member of Kundil Sena stated, "We urge the Assam government to promptly investigate the alleged corruption and irregularities concerning the Chutia community development fund. If our claims are unfounded, council members and government officials should be willing to engage in a public debate and provide evidence of the funds' proper use."

The organization also called for the establishment of a new council with representatives chosen from the community and requested the State Archaeology Department to create an official map of the historic Chutia Kingdom.

Kundil Sena warned of escalating protests if their demands are not met, announcing plans for district-level community meetings and signature campaigns starting June 6, followed by an indefinite hunger strike beginning June 21.
