Palasbari, Oct 22: The annual boat race, held in celebration of Bijoya Dashami, attracted a large crowd to the Kalahi river in Kukurmara on Wednesday. This event was a highlight of the golden jubilee festivities organized by the Kukurmara Anchalik Sarbajanin Durga Puja Committee.

Founded in 1977, the committee marked its 50th anniversary with an extensive 11-day celebration from October 11 to October 21, showcasing a variety of vibrant events and cultural programs.

The boat race, a cherished tradition during Dashami in the area, featured nine competing boats, thrilling thousands of onlookers who gathered along the riverbanks.

In this year's competition, the boat “Ishwar Putra No. 2 Jiyakuri” clinched the top spot, earning a cash prize of Rs 31,000 and a trophy. The second place went to “Ashirbad of Gumi Jarapara Raij,” which received Rs 21,000 and a trophy, while the “Mama-Bhagin” boat from Chamaria secured third place, winning Rs 7,000 and a trophy.

Despite the excitement, the traditional boat race faces significant challenges due to the increasing silting of the river. Local residents voiced their concerns about the Kolohi river becoming shallower, complicating navigation for the boats during the race.

They have called on the State government to take urgent action to clear the river and restore its navigability, emphasizing the importance of preserving this cultural heritage that unites communities and maintains a sporting tradition passed down through generations.

Community members highlighted the need for effective measures to safeguard the river to ensure the continuation of this beloved tradition.
